If you wish to encourage your children to express their creative side, it’s important to make the activity as enjoyable as possible. Even the most artistic of kids usually don’t start out yearning to master the techniques of Rembrandt, so put yourself in their place! Kids (and hey, let’s not kid ourselves, adults too) enjoy things that glow, things that blink, and things that move unexpectedly.Glow Doodle

As far as art goes, you can certainly give them a fun and unique drawing pad that encourages them to draw and draw to their heart’s content. Glow-in-the-dark art is nothing new, but there are some new toys that are definitely making it interesting and even more enjoyable than it used to be. Now each sketch can light up the night with colored markers, not just the standard pink on midnight blue of the glow-in-the-dark drawing toys of my youth.

The best part is, whenever your child’s creative bug strikes, he or she can listen. These toys are small but children get attached—some (like I was) can barely do anything that is not related directly to music, no matter how urgent it may be.

The Lineup

The Alex Toys Glow Doodle has proven to be good cheap fun. It’s a simple black light and dry-erase easel that provides hours and hours of fun. It’s great to draw on and then view the results lit up in the dark. The product usually retails for about $15. It also comes with glow-in-the dark dry erase markers, multi-colored glow-in-the-dark pencils, and a few extra sheets of paper to express all your most fanciful dreams upon. The mechanical aspects of the toy might have been better thought out—the battery screws holding tighter, the power button easier to toggle, but other than that, this toy is inexpensive and fun, and it bears repeating.

Now if you want even less mess, the GloPad GloDoodle is of a comparable price but with a different method that may appeal to younger children. The GloDoodle uses no markers or pencils or paper, it is simple vinyl sheet that turns a different color when it makes contact with the layer underneath. The GloDoodle comes with a stylus for fine point drawing, but can also be drawn on using a capped pen, or even a handprint. After you’re done drawing, just separate the two layers with the handy slider and you can start all over again.

Lastly, if you really want to get serious about some kid-pleasing glow-in-the-dark artistry, there’s the Doodle Glow Pro. This one runs at about $100 at some retailers, but it also blinks, comes with compartments for storage of glow-in-the-dark materials, as well as stencils to inspire a little creativity just in case your well is running a little dry.

Glow DoodleThese are definitely my picks to bear in mind if you want to acquire some glow in the dark entertainment for your kids, but make sure you have extra sheets of paper on hand—as soon as you see them having their fun, you’ll probably want to join in yourself.
